Kaleva in 2030 – What will the future of media look like?
Kaleva Media celebrates the 125th anniversary of the newspaper Kaleva by organizing a hackathon event for university and college students.
Gather a team of 3-6 people, sign up and get ready to create something new. Travel, accommodation and food are paid for. Enrollment through your own university.

Accommodation and travel expenses:
Kaleva has reserved accommodation for the teams arriving from Kajaani and Rovaniemi in Hostel Huvila (Panimotie 1, Oulu). Kaleva is responsible for accommodation costs and travel costs with the cheapest means of transport. Reservations for accommodation and trips are handled centrally in Kaleva based on the registration information provided by the higher education institutions.

Rules
Eligibility:
All students from Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, Lapland University of Applied Sciences, the University of Lapland, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Oulu are eligible to participate. Participants must form teams of 3–6 people. Universities may assist students in forming teams and are responsible for team registrations. The competition is bilingual; the task and instructions will be available in both Finnish and English.
If more than 12 teams register, Kaleva, together with the universities, will make a selection based on interdisciplinary diversity and team composition. If fewer than eight teams register, the event will not take place.
Universities are responsible for collecting registrations internally and forwarding the participant lists to Kaleva. Participants will receive a free Kaleva subscription, with a link sent after registration confirmation.
Competition Task and Timeframe:
The task will be announced on Thursday, 14.11.2024, at 12:00. The competition will end on Saturday, 16.11.2024, at 12:00, when the project must be submitted to the jury.
Teams are free to choose the format and method of implementation. The presentation of the project should last 10–15 minutes, depending on the number of teams. The project must be well-documented.
Project Submission and Presentation:
Projects must be submitted to the jury by Saturday, 16.11.2024, at 12:00. Teams will present their work to the jury between 12:30 and 15:00.
Prizes:
The prize amounts are as follows:
1st place: 5000 €
2nd place: 3000 €
3rd place: 2000 €
A total of 10,000 € in prize money will be awarded.
Jury and Evaluation Criteria:
The jury will include representatives from universities, Kaleva, and an independent media expert.
The evaluation criteria are creativity, technical quality, and the project’s potential in the context of the future of media. The final composition of the jury will be announced closer to the event.
Expert Assistance:
During the Hackathon, teams will have the opportunity to receive assistance from experts. The experts will be announced closer to the event.
Intellectual Property and Project Ownership:
All solutions developed during the competition will become the property of Kaleva365 Oy.
